A landslide in Yaounde, Cameroon, killed about 11 people who were attending a burial ceremony on Sunday.
The people were said to be gathering at the top of a hill for a memorial service for five dead relatives, and suddenly the soil collapsed on some of them, killing about 11 persons.
Governor of the Centre region that includes Yaounde, Paul Bea, was said to have told state radio that “Some were sitting in a tent where there was a landslide early this evening,” adding that rescue operations were ongoing.
a rescue worker was cited to have said that the search was suspended late Sunday evening but there was resumption of activities on Monday morning.
A surviving participant at the funeral, Marie Claire Mendouga, 50, was said to have narrated: “We had just started to dance when the ground collapsed.”
