Mass protest erupted in Kenya on Monday after the electoral commission announced the result of the presidential election, declaring Deputy President William Ruto winner.

Supporters of Raila Odinga in Kisumu stormed the streets, hurling stones, agitating the defeat of their leader, and accusing the commission of rigging the election.

The police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters and drive them off the streets.

The protesters were said to have expressed their anger over the defeat of Odinga in his fifth attempt to be  President of Kenya.

Odinga had lost in the presidential elections in the 2007, 2013 and 2017 in Kenya.

The protesters gathered in large numbers at a roundabout in the western lakeside city, in Kisumu, on Monday evening,  throwing stones and setting tyres on fire, and blocked roads with broken rocks. They were chanting: “It was not free and fair. We were cheated;” “The government must listen to us. They must redo the election;” “You can’t steal from us!” “We will not surrender!”  arming themselves with vuvuzela horn.

Kisumu was thrown into inferno, the protester burnt   tyres and wooden stalls, barricaded major intersection, insisting “No Baba, No Peace”.

Many shops in Kisumu were closed as soon as the presidential result was announced, in the fear of outburst of violent protests as four of the seven commissioners in the electoral commission rejected  the presidential result before it was  announced by   the chairman.
