MTN Nigeria secures spectrum lease renewal with NTEL, expands network coverage across States
MTN Nigeria Communications PLC (MTN Nigeria) has announced the renewal of its spectrum lease agreement with Natcom Development and Investment Limited (NTEL), following approval by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The renewed agreement extends a strategic partnership that began in 2023 and underscores MTN Nigeria’s commitment to improving connectivity and expanding its network capacity across the country.
The original agreement allowed MTN Nigeria to lease two critical spectrums: a 5 MHz Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) in the 900 MHz band and a 10 MHz FDD in the 1800 MHz band. These spectrums have significantly enhanced 3G and 4G connectivity in 19 states since 2023.
The renewed lease, effective May 1, 2025, includes:
A two-year extension for the 5 MHz and 10 MHz FDD spectrums in the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands, maintaining coverage in the same 19 states.
A one-year lease expansion for the remaining 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), effective January 1, 2025.
This agreement aligns with MTN Nigeria’s goal to deliver superior service quality by improving network coverage and capacity, leveraging the increasing demand for data services across the country.
MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, expressed satisfaction with the renewal, highlighting its impact on service delivery.

“We are pleased with the renewal of the spectrum lease agreement with NTEL, which now includes coverage for all states, including the FCT,” Toriola said. He added that the agreement enables MTN to enhance its 3G and 4G user experience, boost network reliability, and meet the growing demand for data services.
In the second quarter of 2023, MTN Nigeria approved a spectrum lease agreement with NTEL valued at ₦4.25 billion, covering all associated costs, including taxes, regulatory fees, and ancillary charges. This two-year lease, effective May 1, 2023, laid the foundation for improved connectivity across the 19 states.
Later, in September 2023, MTN Nigeria announced NCC approval for its acquisition of a 2.6 GHz spectrum to further increase network capacity and elevate customer experience through faster and more reliable service.
The renewed lease agreement reflects MTN Nigeria’s strategic vision to expand its network reach and enhance service delivery for customers across Nigeria. With the continuous growth in demand for data services, MTN is poised to remain a leader in providing robust and efficient telecommunications solutions nationwide.
