N553.9m disappears in Shoprite, salesgirl docked
One month after a salesgirl identified as Mariam Mufutau, was employed in Shoprite retail outlet, N553, 956, 000 was allegedly stolen by her.
Shoprite stores located in Eti-Osa, Lagos, was where the accused stole the amount, being the proceeds of sales realised by the accused one month after she was employed.
Arraigned on Friday before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, Mufutau was said to be standing trial on a two-count charge of stealing.
The police prosecutor, Esther Adesulu, told the court in charge No: J/38/2017 that the defendant committed the offence between April and May, 2017 at Shoprite Stores, Eti-Osa, during working hours.
National Daily further learnt that the defendant allegedly failed to remit the money into her employer’s account.
It was further gathered that the company’s management uncovered the fraud after an audited accounts of the company was carried out.
Though the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges as read, the prosecutor reiterated that the offence ran contrary to the law and was punishable under sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
Considering the gravity of the offence, the Magistrate O.O Owunmi, thereafter granted her bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to July 28, 2017 for further hearing.
