The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has initiated an investigation into reports that over 16 civilians and vigilantes were mistakenly killed during military air strikes in Zamfara State over the weekend.

The operation, carried out in Tungar Kara, Zurmi Local Government Area, was part of efforts to combat banditry in the region.

According to intelligence reports quoted by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, vigilantes were mistaken for fleeing bandits during the air strikes. The bandits had reportedly fled the area shortly before the attack.

On Sunday, Olusola Akinboyewa, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, refuted claims of civilian casualties, stating that the air strikes were conducted based on credible intelligence.

“There is no verified report of civilian deaths,” Akinboyewa explained.

However, the Zamfara State Government issued a counter-statement asserting that the operation resulted in civilian casualties. According to the state government, the strikes occurred in troubled areas of Maradun and Zurmi LGAs under Operation Fansan Yamma.

Hours later, NAF expressed concern over allegations that vigilantes were inadvertently targeted during the operation. In a formal statement, Akinboyewa emphasized the Air Force’s commitment to accountability and the sanctity of civilian life.

“As a responsible and professional custodian of airpower for the security of the nation, the NAF believes in the absolute value of the life of every Nigerian,” the statement read.

NAF has assured the public that a thorough investigation is being conducted to establish the facts and determine accountability. The findings, according to Akinboyewa, will be made public in due course.

“While our mission in the North West remains to combat banditry and restore peace, the safety and well-being of all Nigerians are of utmost importance,” the statement read.

NAF also pledged to strengthen measures to minimize risks to civilians during operations, emphasizing its commitment to collaborating with local authorities and communities.

The latest incident is not the first time Nigerian military operations have reportedly resulted in civilian casualties. In December 2023, Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa vowed to minimize collateral damage during air strikes, emphasizing that the military’s duty is to protect, not harm, Nigerian citizens.

Despite this pledge, similar incidents have been reported, raising concerns about the military’s operational protocols in conflict zones.

Military and security analysts have expressed differing views on the incident:

Dr. Kabiru Sani, Security Expert: “This highlights the complexity of combating banditry in densely populated areas. While precision strikes are key, better intelligence-sharing with local vigilantes could prevent such tragic mistakes.”

Retired Air Commodore Danjuma Bala: “The Air Force has made significant strides in its operations, but this incident underscores the need for rigorous pre-operation assessments. It’s vital to enhance coordination between ground forces and air units to avoid misidentifications.”

Civil Society Advocacy: Groups have called for increased transparency and the inclusion of human rights observers in military investigations. “Civilian safety must always be prioritized in military operations,” stated the Human Rights Advocacy Council.

As NAF works to ascertain the facts, public confidence in the military’s ability to safeguard lives in conflict zones remains critical. The outcome of the investigation will likely shape future military engagements in Zamfara and beyond.

Observers emphasize that addressing the root causes of insecurity and fostering trust between the military, local authorities, and communities will be essential to ensuring long-term stability in the region.
