National Convention: PDP leaders, 3,600 delegates arrive Abuja to elect new NWC
The National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) commenced at the Eagles Square, Abuja, on Saturday for the election of new members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). The national convention will overlap into Sunday, October 31, 2021.
PDP leaders had declared that the convention is the beginning of the party’s mission to rescue Nigeria from the prevailing socio-economic maladies.
In the build up to the national convention, PDP leaders in the various zone – from the north to south – conducted preliminary selection processes to nominate consensus candidates for the various positions as zoned to the respective zones by the party’s zoning committee.
However, the Chairman of the PDP Convention Organising Committee, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, on Friday disclosed that there are still three positions that consensus had not been made, adding that the PDP leadership is working hard to reconcile make the aspirants have understanding and concede to consensus candidate.
Governor Fintiri had revealed that 3600 delegates from the 36 states of the federation will be election the principal officers of the party at the national convention on Saturday and Sunday in Abuja.
Fintiri had stated on Friday: “At the moment we are making efforts to reconcile most of our contestants so that we can scrutinise them and have a better convention
“We are expecting 3600 delegates tomorrow. Most of the positions, as of today, except for three will not be contested…”
Other party leaders have shown optimism that the national convention will prepare the PDP for the 2023 general elections in the country when the party anticipates to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, has been emphatic on the PDP Rescue Nigeria Mission. Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State had also declared that the PDP has become more united than ever before, warning that the party will not tolerate anyone obstructing its Rescue Nigeria Mission.
