Obasanjo affirms Abeokuta roots, dismisses speculation over ancestry
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has firmly dismissed recurring speculation about his ancestry, insisting that his roots remain in Abeokuta and reaffirming his enduring connection to the Ogun State capital.
The former president made the clarification during a fireside conversation with veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, at the unveiling of the Charly Boy Foundation and the launch of the memoir, 999: A Memoir in Tribute to Late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, in Lagos.
Addressing what he described as persistent public speculation surrounding his origin, Obasanjo stated that there should be no ambiguity about his ancestry, stressing that his family’s ancestral home remains in Abeokuta.
According to the former president, his heritage is deeply rooted in the historic Ogun State city, where his family house still stands, a fact he said should settle recurring questions regarding his background.
The event, which celebrated the launch of the Charly Boy Foundation and honoured the legacy of the late jurist, Chukwudifu Oputa, also provided Obasanjo with an opportunity to revisit significant milestones in Nigeria’s democratic journey and his role in shaping the country’s political landscape.
His comments came against the backdrop of renewed public interest generated by his reflections on his administration and the political partnerships that defined the beginning of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.
Political observers note that while the discussion on ancestry was separate from his political remarks, it underscored Obasanjo’s resolve to correct what he considers misconceptions about his personal history.
The former president’s remarks have once again drawn attention to his enduring influence on Nigeria’s political discourse, with his reflections on identity, leadership and the country’s democratic evolution continuing to generate widespread public interest years after leaving office.
