Osinbajo presidency: The accusations, counter-accusations and what has happened so far
The vice president, Prof. Yemi Osinbanjo, after he had made his intentions of running for the office of the president known, may not be finding it easy since then. Naturally, he is not the only one coming up to declare an interest in the presidency, so naturally, it will not be easy for him.
So what has happened so far since the day Osinbajo made his decision to enter the presidential race?
1. Tinubu ‘systematically undermined’ Osinbajo: Shortly after Osinbajo made his decision to join the race, Tinubu was having a meeting with some governors of the All Progressives Congress (Osinbajo had also met with some governors the night before). After the meeting, in a moment with the press, Tinubu was asked what he had to say about his son, who had just declared interest in the presidency. In his reply, Tinubu said, “I have no son grown enough for the presidency.”
2. Osinbajo, after the declaration, was seen by some as a betrayer. Osinbanjo’s decision did not go well with many people, as some started seeing him as a traitor. Of these people are Joe Igbokwe, who wrote on his Facebook wall and, sourced from dailypost.ng, made the following statements concerning Osinbajo: “Is this how we will pay Asiwaju for helping to lift us up? This monumental betrayal has no part 2. I am totally diminished as a mortal who understands very well the meaning and power of loyalty, ”. It was not only Igbokwe that was displeased with Osinbajo; Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, a notable person in the APC, also called Osinbajo’s declaration “immoral” and “treachery” against Tinubu.
Adamu Garba, in a tweet he posted said “when someone can betray a man who supported, nurtured and built him, it means that the person can also betray the whole world shamelessly, when given the opportunity.” as reported by nationaldailyng.com. Although he did not mention names in the post, but it won’t be far from the truth if one should assume that he was referring to Osinbanjo.
3. Others see Osinbanjo as not betraying anyone. We know that for every matter, there are always for and against. While some are against Osinbajo’s actions, some have also backed him. One of these people is Primate Elijah Ayodele, who believes Osinbajo “did not betray anyone”.
Similarly, the Osinbajo Think Tank group has also declared that Osinbajo did not betray anyone, according to reports made available by channelstv.com.
4. The Senate is divided over Tinubu, Osinbajo and Amaechi: vanguardngr.com reported that different camps in the House of Senates have emerged. Some are supporters of either Tinubu, Osinbajo or Amaechi.
5. Osibanjo relocated his party membership from Lagos to Ogun: According to dailytrust.com, Osinbajo relocated his party membership from Lagos to Ogun within the last week. Although the reason behind it was not available, it’s probably to avoid confrontations with Tinubu. In contrast, in an interview with Mr. Tolu Babaleye, who is the Director-General of Ondo State Network for Bola Tinubu, Vanguard Newspaper said it was even Tinubu that asked Osinbajo to move his membership to Ogun because he had no political value in Lagos.
