Over 20 Schools, 23 Markets Closed in Benue Due to Insecurity, Says Local Government Chairman
By Oguine Daniel
The Chairman of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area in Benue State has reported that ongoing criminal activities in the area have forced the closure of numerous schools, markets, and health clinics for over a year. Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday, Chairman Shaku revealed that the widespread insecurity has left much of the council’s social infrastructure damaged and in disrepair.
According to Shaku, more than 20 schools, 23 markets, and 13 primary health clinics remain shut due to persistent threats from criminal elements. He added that the situation has severely impacted agriculture, the area’s main source of livelihood, and has affected eight council wards.
“The insecurity in this area is deeply challenging,” Shaku noted. He emphasized that his administration is committed to rebuilding and restoring key sectors within the council, with a focus on health, education, roads, agriculture, and security to revive the local economy and reopen schools.
The chairman also described the council secretariat as needing “total rebuilding.” With a recent Supreme Court ruling granting autonomy to local governments, Shaku expressed optimism that he could begin revitalizing the council’s deteriorated infrastructure and deliver on his campaign promises
