Real Warri Pikin urges Federal Government to aid Nigerians battling suicidal thoughts
By Orukpe Rebecca.
Real Warri Pikin, a Nigerian comedian known as Anita Asuoha, has called on the Nigerian government to ensure the affordability and accessibility of therapists for those suffering from suicidal thoughts or dealing with the aftermath of those who have taken their own lives. In a video broadcast on her Instagram account, Real Warri Pikin revealed that she had attempted suicide in June 2018 and urged the government to take serious action on the issue.
World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on 10 September each year and exists to promote awareness of the rising problem worldwide. The comedian stated that over 700,000 people commit suicide each year, equating to one life lost every four seconds. She called on the government to increase access to affordable therapy for those who need it, and said that it is critical that Nigerians normalise talking about mental health and suicide prevention.
Real Warri Pikin believes that it is vital that Nigerians are kind to one another and avoid what she describes as “tough love”, which she describes as “not good”. She emphasised the importance of checking in on friends and acquaintances, as people should not be assumed to be okay through face value. In order for Nigeria to make a serious impact in tackling the issue, she believes it will take individual and institutional efforts to come together to prevent those feeling isolated from feeling abandoned.
