Spain edge Belgium 2-1 to reach World Cup semi-finals
Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Belgium in a thrilling quarter-final in Los Angeles.
The win sets up a blockbuster semi-final clash against France, who defeated Morocco 2-0 a day earlier to secure their place in the last four.
Spain dominated possession in the opening stages and took a deserved lead in the 30th minute through Fabián Ruiz, who capitalised on a rebound after Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois parried Dani Olmo’s initial effort.

Belgium responded strongly and levelled before half-time when Charles De Ketelaere converted Timothy Castagne’s inviting cross to restore parity.
Both teams continued to create chances after the break in an entertaining contest, with the goalkeepers producing a series of crucial saves to keep the score level.
Belgium suffered a major setback late in the game when Courtois was forced off with a thigh injury. The veteran goalkeeper was replaced by Senne Lammens.
Spain made the most of the opportunity, scoring the decisive goal in the 88th minute. Lammens failed to hold a long-range strike, allowing Mikel Merino to react quickest and tap home from close range.
The Spaniards defended resolutely in the closing minutes to preserve their lead and end Belgium’s World Cup campaign.
“We stayed calm and believed until the end,” Merino said after the match. “These are the moments you dream about.”
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised his side’s determination after securing a place in the semi-finals.
“This squad never stops believing. They showed character against an outstanding opponent,” he said.
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia expressed disappointment at the result, saying his side paid the price for fine margins.
“We competed well, but small details decided the match. Losing Courtois also hurt us,” Garcia said.
Spain will now face France for a place in the World Cup final as they continue their quest for a second FIFA World Cup title.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match was played at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California, United States.
