Teacher dies after alleged assault by parent over pupil’s discipline in Kogi
The Kogi State Police Command has launched a homicide investigation following the death of a 30-year-old primary school teacher, Maryam Usman, who allegedly died from injuries sustained after being assaulted by a parent and two other persons over the disciplining of a pupil.
The incident occurred at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State. Police said the suspects fled the scene after the attack and are currently being tracked.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Oyiza Salisu Afusat, the assault followed a routine disciplinary action taken by the teacher against one of her pupils.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a man identified as Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two unidentified women, allegedly stormed the school and attacked Usman in retaliation for disciplining the child.
The teacher reportedly sustained severe injuries during the assault and was initially rushed to a medical facility in Ugbamaka for treatment. As her condition worsened, she was transferred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo, where she died on Thursday, June 25, despite efforts by medical personnel to save her.
Following her death, police officers visited the school and the victim’s residence as part of the investigation. Her body has been deposited at the General Hospital, Ankpa, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
SP Afusat condemned the attack, describing it as a criminal act that would not be tolerated. She said the command had commenced a manhunt for Abdullahi Ishaka and his two alleged accomplices, who remain at large.
The police appealed to members of the public, particularly residents of Olamaboro and surrounding communities, to provide useful information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
The command assured that everyone connected with the incident would be brought to justice and urged members of the public to resolve grievances through lawful channels rather than resorting to violence.
