Tinubu set for cabinet reshuffle; analysts anticipate changes in Petroleum, Defense, power ministries
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to announce a major cabinet reshuffle this week, according to authoritative sources close to the presidency.
The move, which could be revealed as early as today, September 23, 2024, is said to involve several key ministries, with officials already selected for replacement.
While specific ministers have not been named, reports suggest that the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Ministry of Power, Ministry of Defense, and other critical sectors could see changes.
Analysts believe that this reshuffle reflects Tinubu’s intention to accelerate reforms in sectors crucial to Nigeria’s economic recovery and national security.
According to political analyst Dr. Adeola Ogunleye, “The reshuffle is likely part of a broader effort by the administration to inject fresh energy into ministries that are seen as underperforming or needing new leadership to meet Tinubu’s ambitious goals, especially in energy, defense, and transportation.”
The Ministry of Petroleum Resources is expected to be a focal point of the shake-up, given the government’s prioritization of energy sector reforms amid global oil price fluctuations.
Analysts note that poor performance in addressing Nigeria’s power crisis and infrastructure gaps may also prompt leadership changes in the Ministries of Power and Transport.

“Tinubu’s administration is facing pressure to show results on energy reforms, particularly given Nigeria’s reliance on oil revenue and the need to stabilize the power grid,” said energy expert Bode Ige.
“The Ministry of Power has been struggling with implementation, and a new leader might be tasked with driving accelerated reforms.”
In the defense sector, a reshuffle could signal the president’s desire to revamp the country’s approach to national security as it deals with ongoing security challenges.
Defense analyst Funmi Adegoke remarked, “We may see someone with a strong strategic background taking over the Ministry of Defense, which would be crucial in combating insurgency and ensuring internal security.”
With Nigeria’s economy and security at the forefront of Tinubu’s administration, the cabinet reshuffle is seen by experts as a critical step to recalibrate his government’s direction.
Investors and political stakeholders are watching closely to see how these changes will impact the execution of Tinubu’s policy agenda, particularly in the energy and defense sectors.
