U.S. Embassy in Abuja, consulate in Lagos to close for Juneteenth holiday
The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that its Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day.
The announcement was contained in a statement posted on the mission’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, confirming a temporary suspension of public services across both diplomatic missions for the holiday.
According to the statement, normal operations, including consular and diplomatic services, will resume after the public holiday.
The closure means that routine services such as visa processing, passport applications, and other non-emergency consular appointments will not be available on that day.
Juneteenth is observed annually on June 19 in the United States and commemorates the end of slavery in the country. It marks June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln.

The day gained federal recognition in 2021 when it was officially declared a public holiday following the signing of legislation by then-President Joe Biden.
Since its designation, U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide have observed Juneteenth as a public holiday in line with federal government practice.
Diplomatic observers note that such closures are standard across U.S. missions globally and are typically communicated in advance to allow applicants and service users to plan accordingly
Normal operations at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos are expected to resume on the next working day following the holiday.
