Udom Emmanuel in EFCC net over alleged N700bn fraud
Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, has been arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of misappropriating N700 billion during his tenure.
Sources reveal that Emmanuel was taken into custody shortly after arriving at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday around 12:30 p.m. He had reportedly visited the commission to honour an invitation related to an ongoing investigation into financial misconduct.
According to insiders familiar with the matter, the former governor was invited by the EFCC as part of a probe into the alleged diversion of state funds amounting to N700 billion.
His arrest marks a significant development in the commission’s ongoing efforts to combat high-profile corruption.
A senior EFCC official, who spoke anonymously, confirmed that Emmanuel is being questioned over various financial transactions linked to his time in office.
The investigation reportedly centers on contracts awarded during his administration, alleged embezzlement of public funds, and suspected money laundering activities.
As of the time of reporting, the EFCC has not released an official statement detailing the specific charges against Emmanuel. However, sources indicate that his detention could lead to further legal proceedings, depending on the findings of the anti-graft agency.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the EFCC for comments were unsuccessful, as calls and messages were not responded to at the time of filing this report.
The arrest of Udom Emmanuel has sparked mixed reactions across political circles and the public. While some see it as a long-overdue step in holding public officials accountable, others view it as a politically motivated move.

A political analyst, speaking on the development, noted, “This arrest will certainly fuel debates about the fight against corruption in Nigeria. The EFCC needs to ensure transparency and fairness in handling this case to maintain public trust.”
With the former governor now in EFCC custody, legal experts anticipate that he may be charged in court if evidence against him is deemed substantial. If convicted, he could face severe penalties, including asset forfeiture and possible jail time.
Emmanuel, who served as Akwa Ibom State governor from 2015 to 2023, was known for his infrastructural development initiatives and economic policies.
However, his administration has been under scrutiny over alleged financial irregularities and mismanagement of public funds.
The EFCC is expected to provide further updates on the case as investigations progress. More details will follow as the situation unfolds.
