UN official says attacks in Damascus unacceptable
The UN has described the tit-for-tat attacks by the Syrian government and rebels which reportedly led to the death of more than 45 people on Sunday in and around the capital Damascus, as unacceptable.
Stephen O’Brien, the UN under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said that such indiscriminate attacks were unacceptable.
Most of the victims in the attacks were killed in airstrikes and rocket fire that targeted rebel-held towns in the region of Eastern Ghouta on the outskirts of Damascus.
Rebels also fired mortar shells into the centre and suburbs of Damascus controlled by the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
“This is a tragic reminder of the urgency of finding a political solution and securing a nationwide ceasefire,” O’Brien said.
