18 Brigade Nigerian Army awards scholarship to indigent student in Niger State
The 18 Brigade Nigerian Army has awarded a N500,000 scholarship to Binta Yahaya, a 100-level student at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University in Niger State, as part of a program to support deserving students from the brigade’s areas of operation.
The 18 Brigade Nigerian Army in Bida, Niger State, has awarded a N500,000 scholarship to Miss Binta Yahaya, a 100-level student of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai.
The scholarship was presented to Yahaya on Wednesday in Minna by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Taye Ahmed.
“This initiative is aimed at fostering stronger community ties and enhancing civil-military relations,” said Brig.-Gen. Ahmed, adding that the scholarship is part of the Chief of Army Staff’s (COAS) special scheme designed to support deserving students, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds.
Yahaya was selected from a pool of four candidates, including students from Kontagora, Rafi, Shiroro, and Bida—all areas within the operational jurisdiction of the 18 Brigade.
Expressing her gratitude, Yahaya thanked the Nigerian Army for the financial support, noting that the scholarship would go a long way in easing her family’s financial burden, allowing her to focus on her studies.

“This scholarship means a lot to me and my family. It will help me stay focused on my education without the worry of financial constraints,” Yahaya said.
In a related development, the 18 Brigade also opened a condolence register in honor of the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Toareed Lagbaja, who passed away on November 6. Brig.-Gen. Ahmed described the late COAS as a “selfless, committed, and dedicated officer,” whose contributions to the Nigerian Army would never be forgotten.
“His legacies will remain an inspiration to the Nigerian Army and will continue to guide us in our duties,” Brig.-Gen. Ahmed said.
The scholarship award and the tribute to Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja reflect the brigade’s ongoing commitment to supporting educational development and honoring its fallen leadership.
