Flood, landslide kill 41, dozens missing in northern India
Several days of torrential rainfall has caused landslides and flash floods that killed many, injuring others and displaced several people in Uttarakhand, North India. Officials in the Himalayan State of Uttarakhand on Tuesday revealed that landslides and flash floods that occurred after several days of heavy rainfall killed 41 people, while dozens were missing northern India.
The Officials maintained that fresh landslides on Tuesday left 35 people dead while six died in similar circumstance on Monday.
The Officials further revealed that not less than 30 persons were killed in seven separate landslides in the Nainital region in the early hours of Tuesday, following cloudbursts – an ultra-intense deluge of rain – which precipitated several landslides, destroying many structures in the region.
Nainital senior civil officer Ashok Kumar Joshi was cited to have stated: “So far 30 people have been confirmed dead, while many people are still missing.”
Joshi had added that the intense rainfall caused widespread damage in remote areas in the hilly region.
One family was identified to have recorded five deaths, as house was buried by a massive landslide.
Five people were identified killed in the northern Almora district by landslide as huge rocks and a wall of mud demolished and covered their home.
The Indian Meteorological Department had issued strong weather warning on Tuesday, alerting people of “heavy” to “very heavy” rainfall in the region in the next two days.
