Man climbs 200 feet up telecom mast to fellowship;NEMA talks him down into police hands

After some moments of praise and worship, Daniel Chibuke Bassi climbed up a telecom mast at Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, got to a point, and decided to scuba-dive as crowds gathered below on Tuesday morning.

As far as he knew, he was fellowshipping, he told the police later.

The scene he made was getting spectacular when the police, NEMA, and SEMA—federal and state emergency agencies—arrived.

They talked him off the ledge—200-foot high on the mast.

NEMA’s coordinator in the South-West Region, Ibrahim Farinloye, who confirmed the incident, said a preliminary investigation showed that the man climbed the mast possibly to commit suicide.

Chibuke later identified himself as an aluminium technician and that he works in Aluminium Village and lives at Dopemu, Lagos.

That wasn’t easy for him to remember, though, when the police brought him to the Gowon Estate Division

“NEMA had to appeal to the Police to leave the distressed man to settle down and calm down because he could not remember his age until he consults some people.

“He told us that he arrived at the scene at about 8am and started climbing the mast at 8.30am.

But before his ascent, Bassi called people around, informed them he wanted to fellowship, and he started with songs and praising.

He didn’t exactly choose that spot. He was led to the area which he never knew before.
