Sanwo-Olu scraps 50% reduction of bus fares in Lagos April 1
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State may have ordered the reversal of bus fares in Lagos State to the 100% status quo before he announced a 50% reduction in the fares of all government transport services in February. The governor had noted that the 50% fare cut was to alleviate the hardship on residents of the state following the perennial petrol and cash scarcity.
However, the state government through the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), in a statement on Tuesday declared that fares of state-owned buses will revert to initial 100% from April 1, 2023.
According to the statement, “With effect from Saturday, April 1, bus fare on all regulated buses — BRT, standard and FLM — shall revert to 100 per cent rate.
“Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, had on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, approved a 50% slash in bus fares following the cash crunch brought about by the recent currency swap.
“Following the Supreme Court and Federal Government’s pronouncements on the use of old notes alongside the new notes and return of stability to the system, the 50% rebate is hereby discontinued.”
