Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, has thrown his weight behind goalkeeper André Onana following the club’s surprise Carabao Cup elimination at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils crashed out of the competition after a dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat at Blundell Park, with Grimsby sealing progression to the next round in front of their jubilant home crowd.

United’s defensive frailties were exposed during normal time as Onana endured another difficult evening between the sticks. The Cameroonian was beaten at his near post by Charles Vernam for Grimsby’s opener before completely misjudging a corner kick that led to Tyrell Warren’s second goal.

Despite mounting criticism over the goalkeeper’s performances this season, Amorim refused to single out Onana for blame. Speaking to reporters after the match, the Portuguese tactician insisted the entire team must take responsibility for the defeat.

“With all due respect, when you play against a fourth-division team, it is not the goalkeeper, it is everything,” Amorim said. “It is the environment, it is the way we face the competition. We know that at the moment, everything people will pay attention to will be massive, every detail.

“We showed that performance today, so my players spoke, for me, really loud.”

The loss piles further pressure on Amorim, who is still searching for consistency in his debut season at Old Trafford. United’s early exit also marks a missed opportunity to secure silverware, with the Carabao Cup often viewed as the most accessible domestic trophy.
