Senegal were crowned champions of the Africa Cup of Nations after edging hosts Morocco 1–0 in a dramatic and deeply controversial final played in torrential rain in Rabat.

The title was decided in extra time when Pape Gueye unleashed a powerful strike into the top corner, a goal that ultimately separated the two sides in a final that will be remembered as much for chaos and controversy as for footballing quality.

The match descended into unprecedented disorder during second-half stoppage time of normal time following a highly contentious penalty decision.

Moroccan forward Brahim Diaz was adjudged, after a VAR review, to have been fouled by El Hadji Malick Diouf inside the box. Diaz stepped up but missed the resulting penalty, a moment that triggered extraordinary scenes on and off the pitch.

Senegal’s players left the field in protest at the decision, particularly after VAR was unable to intervene moments later when Ismaila Sarr appeared to have given Senegal the lead, only for the goal to be disallowed following a premature whistle.

The confusion and frustration spilled into the stands, where some fans broke through hoardings amid the tension in the ninth minute of added time.

As rain poured down, reflecting the anguish on the faces of the Moroccan players, the hosts were left to rue missed opportunities and refereeing decisions that went against them at crucial moments.

Despite a spirited campaign, Morocco were unable to deliver the fairy-tale ending many had hoped for on home soil, falling short when it mattered most.

Following the final whistle in extra time, Senegal’s experience and composure proved decisive. The defending champions added another continental crown, reinforcing their status as Africa’s dominant force in recent years.

Sadio Mané was named Man of the Tournament, a fitting recognition of his influence and leadership throughout the competition.

The Senegal captain was celebrated by his jubilant team-mates before receiving his award from CAF President Patrice Motsepe. Mané, who has now led Senegal to two AFCON titles, appeared visibly emotional amid speculation that this could be his final appearance at the tournament.

Until the chaotic closing stages of the final, the tournament had largely been praised for its organisation and relative lack of drama.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe and his team had earned commendation for staging a smooth and vibrant competition, but the refereeing controversies that had simmered throughout the tournament reached an unfortunate climax on its biggest night.
