Nagelsmann vows to stay after Germany’s shock World Cup exit

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has insisted he has no intention of stepping down following his side’s shock elimination from the FIFA World Cup after a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay.

Germany crashed out in the Round of 32 after losing 4-3 on penalties, marking the first time the four-time champions have ever been beaten in a World Cup shootout.

Speaking after the defeat, Nagelsmann, whose contract runs until the 2028 European Championship, said he remains committed to leading the national team despite mounting pressure.

“I’m not someone who runs away,” he told German broadcaster ZDF.

“I want to continue, but in football you don’t always have it in your own hands. If the DFB wants me to, then I will prepare for the European Championship and the Nations League.”

The result is expected to intensify speculation over Nagelsmann’s future, with former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp frequently linked with the Germany job. However, Klopp declined to comment on the rumours.

“I understand that my name is being mentioned, but this is not the moment to talk about it, and especially not with me,” he said.

Midfielder Nadiem Amiri admitted the defeat was painful but expressed confidence in the team’s future, pointing to emerging talents such as Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and teenager Lennart Karl.

“We have a lot of young players, a lot of quality in the squad,” Amiri stated. “But at the moment, thinking about the future is the wrong decision. I’m very sad because it was a shocking end to the game.”
