UEFA threatens FIFA World Cup boycott over proposed private investment plan
Europe’s football governing body, UEFA, has announced that its member associations unanimously agreed to boycott the FIFA World Cup and all other FIFA competitions if the global governing body proceeds with plans to open ownership of its tournaments to private investors.
The decision followed a virtual meeting held on Thursday, during which UEFA’s national associations rejected FIFA’s proposal to establish a new subsidiary that would manage the World Cup and other major competitions.
FIFA had announced on Tuesday that it intends to create a $20 billion subsidiary to oversee its global tournaments and plans to sell up to 20 per cent of the company to external investors as part of efforts to attract new capital.
In a strongly worded statement, UEFA warned that none of its national teams would participate in FIFA competitions as long as the proposal remains under consideration.
“No UEFA national teams will participate in any FIFA competition for so long as these proposals remain alive, unless this proposal has been abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances have been given that FIFA will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership,” UEFA said.
The European governing body argued that the World Cup represents a global sporting heritage that should never be commercialised through private ownership.
“The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product. It is one of football’s greatest sporting legacies. It has been built over generations by players, national teams and supporters across every continent,” UEFA stated.
Reaffirming its opposition, UEFA added: “No part of it should ever be surrendered to private investors. The World Cup is not for sale.”
The standoff sets the stage for a potentially significant conflict between FIFA and its largest continental confederation, with the threat of a European boycott posing a major challenge to the future of the World Cup should the investment proposal move forward.
