Arsenal complete £75m signing of Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães

Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazil international midfielder Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United in a £75 million deal, strengthening Mikel Arteta’s midfield ahead of the new season.

The 29-year-old has agreed to a four-year contract with the Gunners, with the club holding an option to extend the deal by another year.

The transfer brings Guimarães’ four-and-a-half-year spell at Newcastle to an end and becomes one of the biggest deals in Arsenal’s history as Arteta continues to reshape his squad.

Guimarães said the opportunity to work with Arteta and Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta played a major role in his decision to move to north London.

“Since the first time I spoke to Berta and Mikel, I was excited,” Guimarães said after completing the move.

“I just felt inside of me that I need a new challenge in my life and I think to be an Arsenal player is going to be an exciting challenge. I want to win trophies, I want to make history, and I think I’m in the right place to do it.”

The midfielder also revealed that Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice welcomed him to the club with a light-hearted message following the completion of the transfer.

“Come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends,” Rice reportedly wrote.

The pair have previously faced each other in intense Premier League encounters, but will now form part of the same midfield group at the Emirates Stadium.

Guimarães arrives with extensive Premier League experience after making nearly 200 appearances for Newcastle since joining the club.

His arrival gives Arteta another high-level option in a midfield that already includes Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino.

The Brazil international is known for his ball-winning ability, progressive passing and technical quality, qualities that could provide Arsenal with greater flexibility in both possession and defensive transitions.

The £75 million fee also underlines Arsenal’s determination to strengthen their squad as they pursue major domestic and European honours.

Guimarães leaves Newcastle having played a central role in the club’s resurgence under the Saudi-backed ownership.

In his farewell message to Newcastle supporters, Guimarães described the decision to leave as one of the most difficult of his career.

Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson said the club had made efforts to retain their captain but ultimately respected his desire for a new challenge after Arsenal met their valuation.

The signing further increases expectations surrounding Arsenal as Arteta seeks to close the gap on their Premier League rivals and compete for major honours on multiple fronts.
