FG declares two-day public holiday for Eid-el-Fitr celebrations

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid al-Fitr, which signifies the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Tuesday on behalf of the Federal Government.

In the message, conveyed through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the minister congratulated Muslims across the country on the successful completion of the month-long fast.

He emphasised that the spiritual discipline observed during Ramadan should translate into continued commitment to moral values and community service.

Tunji-Ojo urged adherents to uphold the virtues associated with the holy month, including: Love and compassion; Generosity to the needy; Peaceful coexistence; Tolerance and sacrifice; Call for Prayers for Nigeria.

The minister also appealed to Nigerians to use the festive period to offer prayers for national peace, unity, and prosperity.

He stressed the importance of collective responsibility in building a harmonious society, especially at a time when the country faces various socio-economic and security challenges.

Citizens were encouraged to celebrate the festival in a safe and responsible manner while extending goodwill to the less privileged in society.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening national unity, religious harmony, and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse population.

Eid-el-Fitr is one of the most important celebrations in Islam, marking the conclusion of Ramadan, a period devoted to fasting, prayer, reflection, and charitable acts.

The two-day public holiday will enable Muslim faithful to observe the festival with family, friends, and their communities nationwide.
