Fulani herdsmen killings: Buhari cautions against reprisal attacks

President Muhammadu Buhari at the commissioning of a comprehensive special school on Tuesday in Nassarawa State, cautioned against reprisal attacks over provocation of the perennial killings and destruction of property by Fulani herdsmen across Nigeria.

The President expressed his sympathy with families of the deceased and victims of the attacks; appealing that they should endeavor to refrain from reprisal attacks against the herdsmen.

President Buhari affirmed that the Federal Government has put adequate measures in place to end the killings and restore law and order.

The New Year attack by Fulani herdsmen left 73 persons dead in rural communities in Logo and Guma local governments in Benue State. The anguish created by the dastard acts provoked counter attacks by Tiv youths on two occasions which led to the death of seven Fulani men in Gboko.

President Buhari, in Nasarawa, however, had declared: ”I also want to assure the people of the North Central and, indeed, all Nigerians that the federal government is working day night to ensure peace and stability returns. We have deployed additional resources to all the affected areas to maintain law and order.

“I appeal to all Nigerians to refrain from reprisal attacks. The security agencies have standing order to arrest and prosecute any and all persons found with illegal arms. I will once again express my condolences and sympathy to all the affected victims of these barbaric acts.”
