Abia Police arrest man after viral video shows brutal attack on woman

The Abia State Police Command has arrested a man captured in a disturbing viral video allegedly assaulting a woman in a violent attack that sparked widespread outrage on social media.

The suspect was apprehended on June 20 by operatives of the Command’s Violent Crimes Response Unit following an investigation launched after the footage circulated online.

According to police sources, the arrest was carried out in the Ogbor Hill area of Aba after officers tracked the suspect based on intelligence gathered from the viral clip, which triggered public condemnation and renewed concerns over domestic and gender-based violence.

The 58-second video showed the suspect allegedly placing the woman in a chokehold and repeatedly punching her in the face while she struggled to break free. The footage, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, also captured the suspect issuing threats during the assault.

In the recording, the attacker was heard saying, “I will kill you today. You want to die?” a statement that further intensified public anger and calls for swift intervention by security agencies.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the suspect became aware he was being filmed during the incident and moved to confront the person recording the attack. The witness reportedly denied capturing the footage in an attempt to avoid further escalation.

Following the arrest, many Nigerians have commended the police for their rapid response to the viral video, describing the action as a step in the right direction in addressing violence against women.

While the identity of the victim and the exact relationship between both parties remain unclear, authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Abia State Police Command has yet to announce formal charges against the suspect, but officials say he remains in custody as inquiries continue. The case has since reignited public debate on the need for stronger enforcement mechanisms and protection for victims of domestic violence in Nigeria.
