When Mohamed Salah won the African Footballer of Year Award in 2018, many knew that there is more to come from the “Egyptian king” as dubbed by Liverpool fans.

Fast forward to 2021, Salah has emerged as one of the best footballers if not the best and not just in Africa, but in the world.

The 29-year-old who started his professional career in 2006 and husband to Magi Sadeq with two lovely children Kayan and Makka has taken the world football by storm as he eventually equaled the record as African top scorer in the Premiership with his 104th goal against Watford on Saturday.

Ivorian legend Didier Drogba has set the record as top African scorer in the Premier League six years ago with his 104 goals in 254 appearances while also having 55 assists to his name during his two spells with English Premier League giants Chelsea before eventually departing the North London club in 2015.

Interestingly, Salah equaled Drogba’s above record in a more fashionable style when he scored his 104th goal in just 166 appearances while boasting of 39 assists with a claim to the Golden boot in quick succession during the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons after scoring 32 goals and 22 goals respectively.

After scoring one of the most memorable goals of recent years in the draw with Manchester City two weeks ago, Salah was at it again scoring a breathtaking effort and setting up two other goals in the 5-0 thrashing of Watford away at Vicarage Road.

Salah hits his 10th goal of the season and scoring in Liverpool’s last eight games

Notably, Salah started his Premiership goalscoring journey in February 8, 2014 in his match for Chelsea against London rivals Arsenal following his arrival from Basel in January same year when he scored his Premier League debut goal four minutes after coming on as a 67th-minute substitute for Oscar in their 6-0 thrashing of the Gunners and since then, the Egyptian talisman has not slowed down.

The Egypt star has now scored seven goals in his last seven appearances for the Reds and he will be hoping to continue the fine form when Liverpool on Tuesday when the Reds play guest to Atletico Madrid in the Uefa Champions League.

National Daily can recall that the Liverpool goal machine Salah recently became the fastest Reds player ever to reach 100 league goals after scoring in the club’s 3-3 draw against Brentford in a Premier League clash on September 25.

The 29-year-old achieved the feat in just 151 Premier League games and also became the 10th highest goalscorer for Liverpool with a total of 135 goals to his name, but has since then scored additional two goals in his last two appearances for the Reds.

Salah’s Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane who also won the illustrious African Footballer of the Year Award in 2019 has done well for himself as he has just four goals to tie-up with Drogba and Salah’s 104 Premiership goals as African top scorers when he scored his 100th goal in his 235 appearances on Saturday.

Liverpool’s manager Jurgen Klopp astonished by Salah’s feat was quick to state that the Egyptian magician is the best player in the world presently.

Speaking to BT Sport: Klopp maintained: “His performance was massive today. The pass for the first goal was great and the second goal was special. He is top. We all see it. Who is better than him? We don’t have to talk about what Messi and Ronaldo have done for world football and their dominance. But right now, he is the best.”

Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville did not waste time to reecho Klopp’s assessment of Salah as the best player in the world right now when he stated:

“I feel he could be [the best in the world] at this moment in time because when I look at Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, they’re players who have been the best for the past five to 10 years, but they’re just not quite at the level right now that they’d ordinarily be at.

“Salah right now is at a level that’s really high and has been for the past three or four seasons. He’s a special player. He’s ruthless, clinical and so single-minded in terms of scoring goals. At this moment in time, he could be.”

Meanwhile, Salah while speaking to BT Sport made his self-goalcoring assessment when asked if he has ever scored a better goal than his latest goal against Watford:

“In the last game, maybe! I don’t know which one was better, this one or the City one. Every time I’m in the box, I’m trying to give the ball to someone to score, or I score by myself. It’s always about the team. I always try to play for the team. The most important thing today is we scored good goals, all of us in front scored. Hopefully, we can carry on like that.

“Sometimes I don’t have luck to score goals. I’m just trying every time to give 100 per cent from what I have and trying to help the team. Sometimes I have luck, sometimes not. But I’m feeling confident at the moment, I feel like I’m scoring goals, helping the team to get points, which is the most important thing.”
