President Muhammadu Buhari at a meeting with governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House, Abuja, reiterated his admission that the 2015 general elections that brought the APC to power was transparent free and fair.  The president enjoined APC governors to join hands and encourage cohesion and unity of the party so as to ensure transparent election and the victory of the party.

Buhari had noted that the party had few days to the National Convention, which holds ion Saturday, saying that they must collectively ensure the success of the convention.

The president reminded the APC governors that their mission was to salvage Nigeria at the time they formed the APC eight years ago. He said that they have maintained steady motivation for patriotic and noble goals. The president added that they have done their best in the past seven years [even when Nigerians are going through unprecedented severe suffering]. He also urged party members to drop personal ambitions that override party interests to deescalate conflicts on the party.

President Buhari had highlighted: “When we came together to form the All Progressives Congress nearly 8 years ago, our goal was National Salvation, our resolve was unshakable, our motivation was patriotic and noble.

“Consequently, by the Grace of God we were rewarded with victory in the 2015 General Elections in a free and fair election.

“Over the last seven years, we have done our best to deliver good governance to the country. We have guaranteed national food security, we have provided modern infrastructure to kick-start economic growth and we have implemented the most comprehensive social welfare programmes in our history.

“Along the way, our party has survived shocks and attempts to derail it.  Our government has also had to endure the worst economic crisis with the free fall of oil prices from an average of $100 per barrel over 16 years of PDP government to an average of $30 – $50 until the recent energy crisis.

“We need to remind ourselves of these achievements and not be diverted by petty quarrels and unseemly jockeying for positions. It will be very sad and regrettable development if these manifest gains are frittered away as a result of internal dissent and rivalry.”
