Educationist wants standard toilets in schools
The proprietor of Scholars Nursery and Primary School, Ilorin, Mr Gbenga Abiona, has called on school proprietors to prioritise standard toilet facilities in school premises.
Abiona, who made the call in Ilorin on Friday in an interview with the our correspondent, said it was important for both public and private school students to enjoy best toilets facilities.
According to him, many schools do not abide by sanitation standards and lack basic toilet facilities in their environment.
“Toilets are not usually given priority. Some proprietors only build classrooms, staff rooms and library for use and care less for toilet.
“It is very dangerous and unhealthy for students to defecate anywhere around the school environment. It is unsafe and unhygienic.
“It also exposes students to diarrhea, cholera, typhoid and malaria which are very dangerous to health,” he said.
The proprietor called on the officials of the ministry of health, environmental sanitation health personnel and education
stakeholders to always visit schools to enforce sanitation standards for students’ safety.
He also called on private individuals and NGOs to support the government by building toilet facilities in public places and school environments.
“We cannot continue to wait for the government to provide everything.
“We cannot sacrifice our students’ health for anything. They deserve access to standard toilets,” he said.
