Fear as US resumes drone war in Afghanistan, bombs first target amidst evacuation
The US military carried out an airstrike against what it said was an ISIS-K planner in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province.
The target was reportedly killed.
But there are fears the on-going evacuation—of US citizens and fleeing Afghan— in Kabul might be imperiled again before August 31.
President Joe Biden threatened retribution days ago when ISIS-Khorasan suicide bomber killed 13 US soldiers, 28 Talibans and many Afghan in a twin suicide attack.
The ISIS franchise in Afghanistan took responsibility, saying it targeted translators that assisted American in their 20-year occupation.
Biden approved the strike on certain ISIS-K planner in the province, according to an official familiar with the matter.
“The unmanned airstrike occurred in the Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan,” spokesman Capt. Bill Urban said Friday. “Initial indications are that we killed the target. We know of no civilian casualties,” CNN quoted a source as saying.
The identity of the person targeted in the US airstrike has not yet been confirmed.
Military Intelligence has confirmed the likelihood of another attack by the terrorist organization.
