FG renames UniAbuja to Yakubu Gowon University
The Federal Government has announced the renaming of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) to Yakubu Gowon University in honor of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), who recently marked his 90th birthday.
The decision was revealed by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, on Monday while briefing State House correspondents following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, which was presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s military leader from 1966 to 1975, is widely regarded for his role in fostering national unity during and after the Nigerian Civil War, as well as initiating several landmark infrastructural and educational projects.
The renaming of the University of Abuja reflects the Federal Government’s recognition of his contributions to national development and leadership.
Minister Idris stated that while the decision has been finalized by the council, the proposal will be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal approval as required by law.
“This is a fitting tribute to a man who has dedicated his life to the unity, peace, and progress of Nigeria,” Idris remarked, emphasizing Gowon’s enduring legacy.
The University of Abuja, established in 1988, is one of Nigeria’s premier federal institutions offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Renaming the university after Gowon highlights his pivotal role in advancing education policies during his tenure, including the establishment of Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme in 1973, which remains a cornerstone of national integration today.
Dr. Abdulrahman Usman, a professor at the university, lauded the move, saying: “General Gowon’s leadership during Nigeria’s most trying times is an inspiration. Naming the university after him is a well-deserved honor that will serve as a reminder of his service to the nation.”
However, some critics have urged the government to prioritize funding and infrastructure development in universities alongside symbolic gestures.
Grace Okoro, a student, noted: “While renaming the university is notable, we hope it comes with efforts to improve our facilities, funding, and academic resources.”
In a related development, the Federal Executive Council also approved free train rides for Nigerians traveling to celebrate the Christmas festivities. The initiative aims to ease the economic burden on citizens amid rising transportation costs and economic challenges.
According to Idris, the free train rides will be available nationwide, ensuring Nigerians can travel safely and affordably during the holiday season.
The formal approval of the renaming by the National Assembly is expected in the coming weeks. If passed, the University of Abuja will officially adopt the name Yakubu Gowon University, marking a significant tribute to one of Nigeria’s most enduring statesmen.
The development underscores the Tinubu administration’s efforts to recognize national leaders while addressing contemporary socio economic challenges, such as improving public transportation during festive seasons.
