Flood: Women, children bear brunt of flooding as over 165 die, 82 missing across 19 States

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has disclosed that women and children have been the most affected in the ongoing flood disaster that has ravaged 19 states across Nigeria in 2025.

According to the agency’s data dashboard released on Friday, a total of 119,791 individuals have been affected by the flooding, which has resulted in 165 confirmed deaths, 82 people declared missing, and 138 others injured.

The report paints a grim picture of widespread displacement and destruction across 43 Local Government Areas (LGAs).

Among those affected are 53,314 children, 36,573 women, 24,600 men, 5,304 elderly persons, and 1,863 people living with disabilities.

The floods have also displaced 43,936 persons, damaged 8,594 houses, and destroyed 8,278 farmlands, compounding food security concerns in already vulnerable communities.

NEMA identified Imo, Rivers, Abia, Borno, and Kaduna as the five worst-hit states with the highest number of flood victims.

Other states affected by the devastating floods include Abia, FCT, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ondo, Rivers, and Sokoto.

The agency said efforts are ongoing to support displaced persons and provide relief materials in collaboration with state governments and humanitarian partners.

It also reiterated the need for proactive disaster risk reduction strategies as the climate crisis continues to fuel extreme weather patterns across the country.
