LASTMA and emergency services rescue driver trapped under 40ft container
LASTMA remains committed to ensuring the safety and efficiency of Lagos roadways and will continue to work collaboratively with relevant stakeholders to uphold traffic laws and enhance public safety.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside other emergency services, successfully rescued a driver from beneath a 40ft container after it fell onto his Toyota Camry at Mile 2, Lagos, on Monday.
Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, confirmed the rescue operation in a statement issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Mr. Taofiq Adebayo. Bakare-Oki explained that the container, which was en route to Apapa, fell onto the car with registration number LSR 293 HJ.
The driver of the Toyota Camry was trapped under the container but was rescued alive through the quick and coordinated efforts of LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
The victim was immediately given medical attention and rushed to a hospital by the joint rescue team.
“Through the swift and coordinated response of LASTMA and other emergency services, the driver was rescued alive and received immediate medical attention,” Bakare-Oki stated.
Security during the operation was maintained by officers from the Kirikiri Police Division, ensuring a secure and orderly environment for the emergency responders.

LASTMA officials also successfully removed the Toyota Camry from under the fallen container.
Efforts to evacuate the container are ongoing, and LASTMA officers continue to manage the scene to ease traffic congestion and restore normalcy to the area.
Bakare-Oki stressed the importance of properly securing containers to prevent such incidents, highlighting that negligence in securing cargo can endanger lives and property.
He urged truck drivers and owners to strictly adhere to road safety protocols.
“LASTMA remains committed to ensuring the safety and efficiency of Lagos roadways and will continue to work collaboratively with relevant stakeholders to uphold traffic laws and enhance public safety,” Bakare-Oki added.
