Liverpool star Diogo Jota dies in car crash weeks after wedding
Portuguese international and Liverpool forward, Diogo Jota, has tragically died in a car accident in Spain, just two weeks after marrying his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, the 28-year-old footballer was travelling with his brother, Andre, when their vehicle veered off the road on the A-52 highway in the Zamora province, located in northwest Spain.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement confirming the cause of the crash or the condition of his brother.
Jota’s untimely death has shocked the football world, coming shortly after he celebrated both a personal milestone and a major career achievement.
In June, he tied the knot with Rute Cardoso in a widely celebrated ceremony in Porto, attended by family, friends, and teammates.

He had also played a key role in Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League title-winning campaign under new manager Arne Slot, contributing crucial goals and performances that helped secure the Reds’ first league crown since 2020.
Tributes have begun pouring in from fellow players, fans, and clubs across Europe, mourning the loss of a player known for his tireless work ethic, technical ability, and humble personality.
Jota, whose full name was Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and went on to score over 50 goals for the Merseyside club across all competitions.
He also earned over 35 caps for the Portuguese national team, representing his country in major tournaments including the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup.
Liverpool FC is yet to release an official statement, but grief is already palpable among the club’s global fan base.
More details surrounding the accident and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
