Medically proven ways on how to treat insomnia
Treating insomnia involves both pharmaceutical and nonpharmaceutical methods.
Your doctor or medical consultant would let you know about what method of treatments would be appropriate. However, you may need to attempt different treatments before finding the right one that is more effective for you.
Sleep hygiene training may also be recommended by your doctor. Sometimes, habits that interfere with sleep causes insomnia. Therefore, sleep hygiene training can help in changing some of these disruptive habits.
Some suggested changes may include the following:
-Avoid taking caffeinated beverages when it is close to your bedtime
-Avoid exercising when it is close to your bedtime
-Reduce the time spent on your bed when you’re not intending to sleep, this includes watching television or surfing the web on your mobile phone.
Medications for Insomnia
In some cases, medications are used for the treatment of insomnia.
Example of a medication that can be used for sleep is an antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl).
This type of medications can have side effects, especially long term, so it’s necessary to talk to a doctor or your medical consultant before using a medication for insomnia.
Some prescription medications that may be used in the treatment of insomnia include:
-Eszopiclone (Lunesta)
-Zolpidem (Ambien)
Seek the appropriate directions from your doctor or medical consultant before making use of any medications or supplements to treat your insomnia.
