NESREA seals popular relaxation garden in Mararaba
You cannot run your business or create fun for yourself at the expense of others
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has sealed off Cyvilian Garden, a popular relaxation spot on Abacha Road, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, due to excessive noise pollution.
Dr. Innocent Barikor, the Director-General of NESREA, revealed on Friday that the closure followed multiple complaints from residents and the facility’s failure to address the noise issue despite several notifications.
Dr. Christopher Beka, Director of Inspection and Enforcement at NESREA, represented Barikor during the announcement.
“We followed due process in shutting down the facility. We investigated complaints from residents, conducted noise level readings at different times, and found that the noise was far beyond the acceptable levels for a residential area,” said Beka.
He further explained that the facility was issued abatement notices as required by law, and an arbitration meeting was held to advise the business to comply with the National Environmental (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations, 2009.
Beka stressed that noise pollution poses a serious health risk and emphasized NESREA’s commitment to addressing the issue to ensure a better quality of life for Nigerians.

He highlighted the impact on citizens’ health, particularly those unable to sleep due to the constant noise.
“You cannot run your business or create fun for yourself at the expense of others,” Beka added.
NESREA is committed to rigorous enforcement of environmental regulations, with plans for more exercises across the country.
Beka also urged Nigerians to become active environmental stewards, adhere to regulations, and report violations.
