Nigerian Army rescues 23 kidnapped passengers in Kogi road ambush operation

Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued 23 passengers abducted by suspected kidnappers along the Ayegunle–Bunu Road in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, following a swift military response to a distress call.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the attack occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Monday when armed men blocked the highway and opened fire on travellers, forcing several passengers into captivity.

Troops of the 12 Brigade in Kabba reportedly mobilised immediately after receiving the alert and moved to intercept the attackers. Although the kidnappers fled before soldiers arrived at the scene, the operation led to the rescue of 23 abducted passengers.

Security personnel also recovered two Toyota commercial buses and a HOWO truck abandoned along the roadside. Two bodies were found at the scene, while five injured victims were evacuated for medical attention at St. Joseph Hospital, Kabba.

A security source said: “The troops immediately launched a pursuit operation leading to the rescue of 23 abducted passengers.”

The rescued victims have since been moved to safety, while military authorities confirmed that follow-up operations are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and rescue any remaining victims.

The Army also noted that surveillance and clearance operations have been intensified along the Ayegunle–Bunu axis, which has recently experienced repeated cases of kidnapping and banditry.

Authorities say the renewed military presence is aimed at restoring confidence and improving safety for commuters using the route.
