The Osun State Government, under the leadership of Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke, has launched the “Imole War Against Drug Abuse” (IWADA) campaign, stressing the critical role of parental involvement in preventing drug abuse among children.
The official launch took place on Tuesday at Igbonnibi High School, Ila-Orangun, with the Commissioner for Federal Affairs, Mrs. Adenike Adeleke, representing the governor.
The campaign targets students from public schools in Boluwaduro, Ila-Orangun, and Ifedayo local government areas within the Osun Central Senatorial District.
Mrs. Adeleke stressed the importance of open communication between parents and their children, encouraging parents to become “talking friends” with their wards. She noted that a strong parent-child relationship helps children feel safe sharing their emotions, concerns, and challenges—particularly those related to peer pressure and substance abuse.”
Mrs. Adeleke further elaborated that such open communication provides an avenue to educate children about the physical, emotional, and legal consequences of drug abuse, while also helping them identify their interests and passions, which can offer them direction and purpose in life.
The commissioner also urged teachers to actively participate in the fight against drug abuse by providing guidance and education to their students.
She warned that drug use among students can lead to long-term physical and mental damage and implored school authorities to treat their students with the same care and concern as their own children.
Highlighting the severe risks of substance abuse, she stated that it could damage vital organs such as the liver, kidneys, and brain, and may lead to a loss of social connection and isolation.

To institutionalize the effort, Mrs. Adeleke inaugurated the “IWADA Club” across public schools, with a mission to sensitize students about the dangers of drug abuse and promote healthy lifestyle choices.
Commending the initiative, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Adelani Aderinola, expressed concern over the increasing rate of drug abuse among students in Nigeria.
He praised Governor Adeleke’s administration for launching IWADA, describing it as a proactive solution aimed at enlightening students and helping them make informed decisions.
Also speaking at the event, Mrs. Toyin Adegoke, Assistant State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), advised students to steer clear of drug use to lead healthier and more successful lives.
The IWADA campaign represents a strategic move by the Adeleke administration to combat drug abuse among youths in Osun State through education, community engagement, and strong institutional support.
