Police apprehend 160 thugs for snatching ballot box, electoral violence in Kano
The Kano State Police Command on Sunday disclosed the arrest of 161 persons caught in the process snatching ballot boxes during the Saturday governorship and house of assembly elections in Kano State.
The Commissioner of Police in Kano, Muhammad Gumel, at a media briefing on Sunday, revealed that one of the arrested persons include a lawmaker in the Kano State House of Assembly, Isiaku Danja. The CP said that they were arrested for snatching ballot boxes and causing violence during the governorship and state house of assembly elections in the state on Saturday.
The Commissioner disclosed that some of the suspects were arrested for vote buying and attempting to burn an office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kano State.
The CP had highlighted: “We had a total of 161 arrests made during the elections. These arrests were made for offenses such as ballot box snatching, vote buying, and attempting to burn an INEC office.
“We are committed to ensuring that the electoral process is peaceful and free of any form of violence, and we will not hesitate to bring to justice anyone who tries to disrupt this process.”
The CP further disclosed that arms were recovered from the arrested persons.
He appealed for public support in the state. According to the CP, “we need the support of everyone in the community to make sure that the elections are conducted smoothly and without any disruptions. We urge everyone to be peaceful and to respect the law.”
