Presidency 2023: I like what Peter Obi is doing but Ebonyi will vote Tinubu – Gov Umahi
Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State on Friday explained why he is not supporting the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, a politician from south east Nigeria, after he had led the agitation for power rotation or zoning of the president to the southeast in 2023.
Governor Umahi speaking on ARISE News television on Friday, said that Peter Obi is his friend and that he likes what Obi is doing, but cannot vote for him in the 2023 presidential election. Umahi simply explained that on joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he swore to an oath to support the APC. He was of the view that voting Obi will contradict the oath he swore and the constitution of the APC.
Umahi has berated the PDP for not compensating the southeast in the party or ceding the presidential ticket to the southeast since its formation. Umahi, citing injustice and marginalization, declared his defection to the APC. He contested the APC presidential primaries and lost, then, went back to Ebonyi State to pick a senatorial ticket.
In the APC, the Igbo leaders of the southeast still failed to get the presidential ticket but Umahi om Friday argued that emphasis should no longer be placed on regional, ethnic, or religious identities in electing Nigeria’s leaders but on capacity to lead. This is after he had led the agitation for zoning of the presidential ticket to the southeast for the 2023 general elections.
