SDP advocates death punishment for persons guilty of rigging elections
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) had on Tuesday advocated capital punishment for persons involved in rigging elections in Nigeria. The National Chairman of the SDP, Oke Idakwene, in a media interaction in Abuja, recommended life imprisonment or death sentence for persons involved in electoral fraud and malpractices in the country.
Idakwene had argued rigging or manipulation of elections in Nigeria has caused the nation irredeemable setbacks in choosing the right leaders in the past 30 years.
The SDP chairman declared the party’s support for electronic transmission of election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The senate had on Tuesday adopted electronic transmission of election results in the amended Electoral Act.
The SDP, however, urged all political parties, essentially the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to abandon the idea of zoning the president, arguing that “it is weakening the nation’s unity and democracy.”
