A controversy has erupted within the National Assembly following a petition demanding an investigation into a disturbing publication shared by Senator Sunday Karimi on the official WhatsApp group of the 10th Senate.

The publication, originally posted by The Reporters, an online media outlet, alleged that the infamous Soviet-era security agency, the KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti), had infiltrated Nigeria’s legislative body.

The petition by Sen. (Barr.) Natasha H. Akpoti-Uduaghan and dated March 5, 2025, submitted to relevant authorities, expresses grave concerns over the claims made in the publication titled “KGB Agent Group Warns Senate: A Call for Vigilance Amidst Threats to Democracy.”

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan who was recently suspended by the Senate, argues that such an alarming assertion threatens national security and warrants immediate investigation.

According to the details provided, Senator Karimi shared the report on the Senate’s WhatsApp group at 4:08 AM Singapore time (8:08 PM Nigerian time) on February 23, 2025, while the petitioner was away in Singapore.

The publication suggests that agents of the KGB—widely regarded as one of the deadliest intelligence organizations in history—may have infiltrated the Nigerian legislature, a claim that has since sparked widespread concern.

The petitioner emphasizes the urgency of the matter, stating that no nation can afford to overlook the presence of such a group within its law-making institution. Given the severity of the allegations, the petition calls for immediate action, with Senator Karimi expected to assist in the investigation by providing any relevant information regarding the report and its sources.

Security analysts have weighed in, warning that the dissemination of unverified and potentially incendiary information could lead to panic and political instability.

Meanwhile, calls have mounted for intelligence agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), to step in and clarify the credibility of the claims.

As of now, Senator Karimi has not publicly addressed the petition or provided further clarification regarding the publication he shared.

The National Assembly leadership is yet to issue an official statement, but sources indicate that security agencies may already be looking into the matter.

With national security at stake, stakeholders are urging swift action to determine whether the claims hold any merit or if they were part of a misinformation campaign with ulterior motives.

The unfolding investigation is expected to reveal more details in the coming days.
