Typhoon floods release hundreds of snakes in Southern China, six dead, thousands displaced (Video)
Severe flooding triggered by Typhoon Maysak has led to the escape of an estimated 800 to 900 snakes from a breeding farm in Hengzhou, Guangxi, adding to the challenges facing emergency responders as devastating floods continue to batter southern China.
According to local authorities, rising floodwaters damaged sections of the snake breeding facility, allowing hundreds of reptiles to slither into nearby villages.
While officials said most of the escaped snakes are believed to be non-venomous, they confirmed that several venomous cobras were also among those that escaped.
Emergency response teams, assisted by local volunteers, have launched an extensive search operation to capture the reptiles and prevent further danger to residents.
Authorities have advised the public to avoid approaching any snakes and to immediately report sightings to emergency services. At least one person has reportedly been bitten by a snake since the escape.
The snake incident comes amid widespread destruction caused by Typhoon Maysak, which unleashed torrential rainfall across Guangxi and other parts of southern China.
The heavy downpours caused reservoirs to overflow, submerged communities, damaged roads and other infrastructure, and forced thousands of residents to flee their homes.
