A UK-based Nigerian man has come forward with a distressing account of his encounter with the Lagos State Police Command. He alleges that officers demanded a payment of N200,000 (approximately £370) from him before they would initiate an investigation into a robbery incident he suffered at gunpoint. The shocking revelation has once again raised concerns about police corruption and the challenges faced by victims of crime in Nigeria.
The victim, identified as Chukwudi Okeke, had returned to Nigeria for a brief visit to his family and was staying in his hometown of Lagos. On a fateful night in late August, Okeke fell victim to an armed robbery while driving home. He reported the incident to the nearest police station, expecting swift action from law enforcement.

However, Okeke claims that instead of assisting him, the police officers allegedly demanded a bribe of N200,000 to launch an investigation into the robbery and track down the criminals responsible. In a desperate plea for justice, Okeke reluctantly paid the sum, fearing that his case would be ignored if he refused.
Speaking about the ordeal, Okeke said, “It was a traumatic experience being robbed at gunpoint, and I thought the police would help bring the culprits to justice. To my shock, they asked for a bribe to even begin the investigation. I felt trapped and had no choice but to pay.”
Okeke’s case highlights the pervasive issue of police corruption in Nigeria, where many citizens have encountered similar demands for bribes in exchange for basic services or protection from the authorities.
The Lagos State Police Command has not officially responded to the allegations made by Chukwudi Okeke. However, the incident has generated outrage on social media and among human rights activists, prompting calls for a thorough investigation and accountability within the police force.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, in response to growing public concern, has assured the public that the matter will be thoroughly investigated. He emphasized the commitment of the police force to maintain integrity and uphold the law, promising that anyone found guilty of misconduct will face appropriate disciplinary measures.
As the investigation into Okeke’s case unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for reforms and accountability within Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies. The incident also underscores the challenges faced by victims of crime when seeking justice and the importance of addressing police corruption to ensure a safer and more just society for all Nigerians.
