Federal Government to develop National Trauma Care policy

The Federal Government of Nigeria is developing a National Trauma Care Policy aimed at providing a strategic framework for managing trauma cases across the country.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, announced this on Thursday in Abuja during a media conference marking World Trauma Day.

This year’s theme, “Workplace Injury: Prevention and Management,” emphasizes the need for improved safety measures.

Pate stated that the policy will encompass all aspects of trauma care, from emergency response to rehabilitation, ensuring high-quality care is accessible to every Nigerian.

Highlighting the global impact of trauma, Pate noted that injuries and violence account for over 4.4 million deaths annually, with low and middle-income countries suffering the most.

He emphasized the need for Nigeria to address local challenges, such as inadequate road safety and limited emergency services.

As part of the initiative, the ministry plans to establish a dedicated clinic for Emergency Medical Services, including care for workplace injuries.

The Permanent Secretary, Ms. Daju Kachollom, reinforced the government’s commitment to creating safer workplaces through proactive safety protocols and emergency care access.

World Trauma Day aims to promote awareness and support for trauma survivors, with calls for enhanced training for staff at trauma centers across Nigeria.
