EU expected to propose stricter rules for deporting rejected asylum seekers

The European Commission is expected to propose stricter rules on Tuesday aimed at making the deportation process more efficient and increasing the number of returned migrants.
According to the commission, only one-fifth of people who are ordered to leave actually return to their countries of origin.
Many rejected asylum seekers remain in the country in spite of a decision against them because their countries of origin refuse to accept them, or procedures take too long.
Under the proposal, deportation decisions made by one EU country would be automatically applied in other member states.
“It is not acceptable for an asylum procedure to be completed in one member state, only for another procedure to be opened in another EU country,” EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner told dpa.
