Carabao Cup: Carragher admits Liverpool ‘couldn’t cope’ with Newcastle’s intensity

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has conceded that the Reds were unable to match Newcastle United’s intensity in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final, as Eddie Howe’s side claimed a historic victory at Wembley.

The defeat capped a disappointing week for Liverpool, who were also knocked out of the UEFA Champions League. Meanwhile, Newcastle secured their first major trophy in 70 years with a determined display.

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak struck on either side of halftime to give the Magpies a commanding lead, while Federico Chiesa’s late goal for Liverpool proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

Reacting to the defeat, Carragher highlighted Liverpool’s struggles against Newcastle’s well-drilled and physically dominant side.

“Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle has been a physical team, but they saved their best for today,” Carragher said while analyzing the match on Sky Sports.

“It wasn’t a great football match, but a lot of that was down to Newcastle’s game plan. There is a lack of pace in Liverpool’s front three.

“It’s not their day—this is all about Newcastle. In terms of set-pieces, duels in midfield, and pace, Liverpool simply couldn’t cope.”

Liverpool, who had hoped to lift their first piece of silverware this season, will now turn their attention to the Premier League and FA Cup as they seek to salvage their campaign. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s long-awaited trophy marks a significant milestone in their resurgence under Howe.
