Anthony Joshua Bids Nigeria Farewell, Eyes Comeback
Two-time heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has departed Nigeria, expressing heartfelt gratitude for the “energy, generosity and kindness” he experienced during his stay as he prepares for his next fight, a move anticipated by fans eager for his return to the ring.
Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua has concluded his time in his ancestral homeland, Nigeria, expressing profound appreciation for the warm reception he received.
The former two-time heavyweight champion, who was in the country for rehabilitation following a recent injury, took to his Instagram account to convey his heartfelt thanks before his departure to England to begin preparations for his upcoming bout.
“Nigeria, thank you for your energy, generosity & kindness,” Joshua wrote in a message that resonated deeply with his Nigerian fanbase, many of whom interpreted it as a fond farewell.
Fans flooded his comment section with messages of support and encouragement for his return to the ring. One fan, Gbadia Figheghawei, urged him to “Go and take over the world, my brother.”
During his stay in Nigeria, the 35-year-old boxer captured the hearts of many with several down-to-earth moments.
His impromptu street-side haircut went viral, symbolizing his connection with the local culture.
Joshua was also frequently seen walking through the streets, warmly interacting with locals and embracing the community’s enthusiastic welcome.
Born to a Nigerian mother and a father of Nigerian and Irish heritage, Joshua has always proudly displayed his Nigerian roots, notably with a tattoo of the African continent, prominently outlining Nigeria’s borders, on his shoulder.
His visit to Sagamu, his ancestral hometown, became a major talking point on social media, generating considerable excitement among his Nigerian supporters.
A highlight of his time in Nigeria included attending the birthday celebration of Africa’s wealthiest man, Aliko Dangote, where he mingled with prominent Nigerian billionaires. He also shared a lighthearted, viral moment with his personal chef.

Joshua’s return to England marks the beginning of his training camp as he recovers from an injury sustained during his knockout loss to Daniel Dubois last September.
His promoter, Eddie Hearn, recently indicated that this could be a crucial year for Joshua’s professional boxing career, potentially marking its final chapter with one to three fights anticipated.
Meanwhile, former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has expressed interest in a high-stakes fight with Joshua next year, signaling his own comeback to the sport.
The American boxer believes a long-awaited clash between the two former champions could materialize in 2026.
Interestingly, Nigerian street-pop artist Portable, known for his controversial persona, might be disappointed by Joshua’s departure. Portable had recently declared his intention to fight Joshua for a staggering N100 million following his own victory over Speed Darlington, deeming the latter an unworthy opponent.
